A flat park that ends directly on the water, an entrance hall with a large staircase, salons with stucco and chandeliers – and a story that is closely linked to one of Italy’s greatest film directors.

Here, in Cernobbio, Luchino Visconti spent the summers of his childhood. Later, he returned to work on his films. Today, Villa Erba on Lake Como is one of the few historic wedding venues in the region that can accommodate large groups of guests without a rainy day becoming a problem.

In this article you will learn everything you need to know about a wedding at Villa Erba: History, spaces, costs, rules, accommodations, the flow of a wedding day – and why this place can offer so much more in terms of photography than the first images suggest.

Villa Erba on Lake Como – A history of a family villa

From the monastery to the summer residence of the Erba family

Where today the Villa Erba There once stood a monastery. In the early 19th century, the property was converted and was at one time part of the estate of the neighboring villa, today’s Villa d’Este. In 1882, Luigi Erba and his wife Anna Brivio purchased the land.

Luigi Erba was the brother and heir of Carlo Erba, the founder of the eponymous pharmaceutical company in Milan. Between 1898 and 1901, the couple built a new villa directly on the lake – more representative and with a clear view of the water. The plans were drawn up by the architects Angelo Savoldi and Giovan Battista Borsani.

Architecture between Neo-Renaissance and Mannerism

The villa has an almost square layout, Arches on the facades, a tower and a wide staircase leading down to the lake. Inside, you’ll find stucco, ceiling paintings, marble floors and chandeliers. The property also includes a greenhouse, stables and its own boat dock.

Luchino Visconti and the summers at the lake

After the parents„ death, daughter Carla Erba inherited the villa. She married the duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone – one of their seven children was Luchino Visconti, the later director of “The Leopard„ and “Death in Venice”. Luchino spent many summers of his childhood here, and even longer after the parents’ separation.

Even as an adult director, he returned. At Villa Erba, he worked on the editing of his film „Ludwig“. Visconti himself described the villa as a real Lombardian villa that his family loved very much.

From a private country estate to a wedding location

During the Second World War, the villa was seized by the German army. In 1986, the heirs of the Visconti family sold the property to a public consortium. A modern exhibition and congress center was built in the park according to plans by architect Mario Bellini.

The historic villa itself has been restored and is today one of the most sought-after properties. Wedding locations on Lake Como. On the upper floor, „Le Stanze di Luchino Visconti“ commemorate the director – now presented as a newly designed multimedia exhibition since 2025.

The Villa Erba today

In addition to weddings, fairs, concerts and gala evenings take place on the premises. Every spring, vintage cars from all over the world arrive; in early October, the Orticolario garden fair transforms the park into a world of plants. For your wedding, that means you’ll be celebrating in a place that’s accustomed to hosting large events – and still has retained all its historical charm.

What makes a wedding at Villa Erba on Lake Como so special

The historic park right on the lake shore

The botanical park of Villa Erba is surrounded by high walls and is completely flat – a rarity on Lake Como, where most gardens slope steeply down to the water. Old trees, exotic plants and spacious lawns lead all the way to the waterfront promenade. For you and your guests, this means no stairs, no narrow paths, but plenty of space to arrive, stroll and celebrate.

The salons of the Villa – stucco, chandeliers and mirrors

On the ground floor, five interconnected salons line up around a central atrium with a large staircase. Ceiling paintings, intarsia, marble and heavy chandeliers give each room its own character. Many windows open onto the lake – the evening light falls directly onto the decorated tables.

Generosity instead of Tightness

Most of the famous villas on Lake Como are built for small groups. Villa Erba is the exception: On the ground floor, up to 450 guests can sit at the tables. This makes it one of the few historic wedding venues on Lake Como that can accommodate 150, 200, or 300 guests – both indoors and outdoors.

The proximity to Como, Milan and Switzerland

Cernobbio is located at the southern end of the lake, just a few kilometers from Como. The highway is about one kilometer away, and the Milan Malpensa airport is about 45 minutes away. For guests from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Villa Erba is therefore one of the most easily accessible locations on the entire lake.

The areas of Villa Erba for your wedding

The classic flow of a wedding at Villa Erba follows the path from the water to the house: ceremony in the park, aperitif on the lake, dinner in the salons, party in the atrium.

Ceremony in the park overlooking the lake

The wedding ceremony usually takes place on the lawn right on the shore – or in front of the facade of the villa, with the grand staircase as the backdrop. Behind you lies the lake, and opposite you the hill of the eastern shore. In the event of rain, the ceremony is moved to the atrium.

Appetizers on the shore and at the Darsena

After the ceremony, the company heads to the water. The waterfront promenade and the small harbor of the Villa, the Darsena, are the perfect place for an aperitif in the evening light. Depending on the date and weather conditions, the terraces overlooking the sea and the park can also be used.

Dinner in the historic salons

For the dinner, five salons and the atrium on the ground floor are available. The largest single room can accommodate around 90 guests, for a total of up to 450. For smaller weddings, they use only one or two salons – this makes it feel more intimate and closed off.

Important to know: Outdoor dining is only allowed under a pavilion – even in good weather. The pavilion is organized through the Villa and takes at least two days to set up and one day to tear down.

Party and dancing until the night

After the dinner, the atrium with its staircase becomes the dance floor. The large entrance hall then looks like a ballroom – a scene that you hardly see a second time on the Lake of Como.

Practical information about the wedding at Villa Erba

How many guests can fit in Villa Erba?

On the ground floor, up to 450 guests can sit at tables, distributed across five lounges and the atrium. The largest single room can accommodate about 90 people. The villa is ideal for parties of around 100 to 300 guests. For very large weddings, you should arrange early on where the bride and groom will sit and how speeches and music are broadcast to all the rooms.

Exclusive use and rental periods

The villa is rented for one evening; the standard rental period runs from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. An extension until 3 a.m. is possible for an additional fee. Those who wish to start earlier, for example with a ceremony in the afternoon, must ask separately. Also, check whether events are taking place at the exhibition center on the same day.

Location and how to get to Cernobbio

Villa Erba is located on Largo Luchino Visconti in Cernobbio, about five kilometers from Como.

  • Milan Malpensa Airport: about 45 minutes
  • Milan Linate Airport: approx. 60 minutes
  • Lugano Airport: approx. 20 minutes
  • Como San Giovanni Station: approx. 10 minutes

There are only a few parking spaces on the premises itself; additional parking spaces nearby are charged separately. Therefore, organized shuttles from the hotels are the best solution.

Arriving by boat – is that possible?

Yes. Villa Erba on Lake Como has its own boat dock. As a couple, you can arrive with a classic wooden boat or have your guests brought directly from the hotel across the lake. However, always plan for an alternative on the road – wind and weather can make boat trips impossible at short notice.

Catering, service providers and requirements of the venue

Villa Erba works with fixed partners. Catering, floristry, entertainment, furniture, fireworks, lighting design and the pavilion must all be booked through the villa. You therefore cannot bring your own caterers or florists. Whether Photography, Video, planning, styling and the wedding coordinator are all optional; you should clarify this in writing before booking.

Music, volume and end times

According to the planners, music is allowed to play outside until around 11 p.m., and inside until 1 a.m. With the paid extension, the party continues until 3 a.m. Please confirm the exact times and any volume limits before signing a contract with a DJ or band.

Decoration and Floristry

As flowers and lighting design flow through the villa, you and your partners will develop your concept together. Request sample quotes early on so that you can realistically plan your style and budget. The salons themselves are already opulent enough that few, generous arrangements often have more impact than many small details.

How much does a wedding at Villa Erba cost?

Villa Erba is one of the few locations on Lake Como whose prices are quite transparent. The following figures refer to the 2027 season and serve as a guide – the current offer of the villa is always binding.

Location rental and what is included in it

The rental fee for 2027, depending on the number of guests, is between 26,000 and 30,000 euros, plus 22 percent VAT. This includes, among other things, cleaning, basic lighting, technical support, and security staff at the entrance. It does not include individual lighting design, decoration, or a pavilion.

Catering and minimum order quantity

The catering starts at 220 euros per person, plus 10 percent VAT – with a minimum of 100 people. So you’ll pay at least 100 for even 60 guests. Be sure to check what’s included in the price: the aperitif, wine, cake, open bar and midnight snack often run separately.

Additional costs that many couples underestimate

  • Pavillon for an outdoor dinner – mandatory, even in sunny weather, price on request
  • Floristry, furniture, lighting design and entertainment about the partners of the Villa
  • Extension the rental period until 3 a.m. or an earlier start
  • Boat transfers and shuttles for your guests
  • Parking spaces outside the grounds

Realistic total budget

Including rent and minimum catering, the total cost is around 56,000 to 61,000 euros. If you add in planning, floristry, photography, music, transfers, and a welcome dinner, a wedding at Villa Erba realistically falls within the six-figure range. Wedding planners at Lake Como estimate an entry fee of around 150,000 euros for about 200 guests.

How early should you book?

For Saturdays in June and September, you should expect at least 18 to 24 months in advance. Just as important are the hotels: Large room quotas in Cernobbio and Como are quickly booked out during the high season.

Plan B in case of rain – this is how weatherproof the Villa Erba is

Hardly any wedding venue on Lake Como has such a strong plan for bad weather as Villa Erba. Up to 450 guests can sit at tables inside – so you don’t have to cut down on the guest list or switch to a different venue.

  • Ceremony: in the atrium in front of the grand staircase
  • Appetizer: in the atrium and in the adjoining lounges
  • Dinner: distributed among the five salons
  • Party: in the atrium and in the former ballroom hall

The only catch: The dinner is spread over several rooms among many guests. Plan early, therefore, how to get speeches, music, and the view of the couple to all guests. In the case of a rain-filled wedding, the salons with candlelight and chandeliers often look even more impressive than on a summer evening.

Accommodations for you and your guests

Staying at Villa Erba itself is not an option for everyone. At first glance, this might seem like a disadvantage, but in Cernobbio it is easily solved: Hardly any other place on the lake has so many large hotels in such close proximity.

Hotels in Cernobbio

The Villa d’Este is located just a few minutes away and is the obvious choice for the bride and groom, family and close friends. For some of the guests in the town center, for example, the Hotel Centrale is suitable – close to the seaside promenade, restaurants and the ferry landing stage.

Accommodations in Como and on the west bank

For larger room sizes, the large hotels between Como and Cernobbio are ideal, such as the Sheraton Lake Como or the Hilton Lake Como. Those who prefer to live right on the lake can find addresses further north, such as the Grand Hotel Tremezzo – but then with a longer journey time. My tip: Focus your guests on two, at most three hotels. That makes shuttles and boat transfers much easier.

Getting Ready – where the bride and groom prepare

According to planners, the bride has a room on the first floor of the villa available for rent. Nevertheless, many couples get ready at the hotel and then come by boat to the villa. Photographically, both are wonderful: the hotel room with a lake view in the afternoon – or the window of a historic salon through which the lake shines in.

The entire wedding weekend around Villa Erba

Anyone who invites guests from abroad to the Lake Como rarely plans a trip for just one day. Cernobbio is an ideal starting point for this.

Welcome dinner the night before

A relaxed dinner on the eve brings both families together before the big day begins. A restaurant on the lakeside promenade in Cernobbio or a terrace in Como are ideal for this – deliberately more casual than the wedding itself.

Boat trip for the guests

For many guests, a shared trip across the lake is one of the most beautiful memories. With private boats or a chartered ship, you reach the villas on the west bank and the small towns on the water.

Farewell brunch the day after

A late brunch at the hotel or in a garden by the lake rounds off the weekend. For me as a photographer Often one of the most beautiful moments: Everyone is relaxed, the tension is gone, and stories from the previous evening are being told.

Excursion destinations for your guests

  • Como: Cathedral, Old Town and seaside promenade, just a few minutes away
  • Brunate: up the cable car, with a view over the entire southern lake
  • Bellagio: accessible by boat, with gardens and alleys at the tip of the peninsula
  • West bank: Villas and gardens like these Villa del Balbianello

Example flow of a wedding at Villa Erba

This is what a wedding day in June could look like, with plenty of time for the aperitif by the lake.

The day begins around 13:00 with getting ready at the hotel. While you get ready in peace, the first details are being created: dress, shoes, rings, letters. Around 15:00, the first look follows, a quiet moment just for the two of you, for example in the hotel garden overlooking the lake.

At 16:15 your boat leaves. The journey across the lake to Villa Erba is one of the most beautiful moments of the day and is a photographic treat. At around 16:30 your guests arrive by shuttle or boat and take their seats in the park.

At 5 p.m., the free wedding ceremony begins on the lawn directly on the shore, with the lake in the background and the facade of the villa as a backdrop. After about 45 minutes, the party moves to the water.

Starting at 17:45, you have about two hours of aperitif on the waterfront and the Darsena. The guests arrive, stop by, and enjoy the view over the lake as the light slowly becomes softer. During this time, the group photos are taken in a relaxed atmosphere. Around 19:00, you will go for a half-hour photo session in the park and on the waterfront, just when the evening light is at its most beautiful.

At 8 p.m., the Villa invites you to a dinner in the historic salons. Between the two courses, around 9:15 p.m., you sneak out for a few minutes to watch the sunset on the lake. At 10:30 p.m., cake and an opening dance follow in the atrium; afterwards, partying continues until 1 a.m., with an extension until 3 a.m.

Important: The standard rental period of the villa begins at 17:00. For a wedding ceremony at 17:00, the setup and arrival of the guests must be possible beforehand. You should request this earlier arrival time when booking., It is calculated separately. In spring and autumn, the couple photoshoot also shifts forward because the sun sets earlier.

Wedding photography in Villa Erba

As a wedding photographer Wherever I go, I look for what makes it unique. At Villa Erba on Lake Como, it’s the interplay between the outside and the inside: wide light on the water, then suddenly stucco, mirrors and candlelight. Hardly any other location on the lake can offer such a diverse array of images in just one evening.

The light in the park and by the water

Cernobbio is located on the west bank of the lake. In the late afternoon, the light falls flat over the park; the old trees cast long shadows; the water begins to shine. In the evening, the sun disappears behind the hills at the back of the villa – then the park is bathed in soft light, while the opposite shore still glows warmly. This is the best time for couple photos by the lake.

The most beautiful photo spots of Villa Erba

  • The stairs to the lake: the facade with arcades and tower in the background, the lake in front of you
  • The waterfront promenade: Free view of the water, ideal for couple photos in evening light
  • The Darsena: the small harbor with boats and stone walls – perfect for your arrival
  • The park: old trees, long paths, shadows and patches of light
  • The atrium: the grand staircase, chandeliers and an almost cinematic expanse

Wedding couple photoshoot on the lakeside and in the boat harbor

When you arrive by boat, your story begins on the water. I like to photograph the arrival from the jetty – and then take a short walk in the wooden boat in front of the facade. This creates images that naturally look like they are on Lake Como, without appearing staged.

Interior shots in the historic salons

Salons are a gift for portraits. High windows let in soft ambient light, mirrors and stucco add depth. In the evening, when only chandeliers and candles are burning, the most evocative images of the dinner are created here.

Villa Erba on Film – 35mm and Super 8

In addition to digital photography, I also accompany weddings on 35mm film and with Super 8. The Villa Erba in particular fits the bill like no other place: a house where Luchino Visconti cut his films deserves images that look like cinema. The boat ride, the staircase to the lake, the opening dance in the atrium – on Super 8 these moments seem like memories from another decade.

What you should avoid photographing

If you start earlier than 17:00, the park is in harsh midday light. Therefore, plan for couple photos in the late afternoon and evening hours. And: For very large weddings, the dinner is divided into several rooms. Please discuss with me in advance which moments should be captured – speeches, table rounds, the reactions of your loved ones.

The best time of year for a wedding at Villa Erba on Lake Como

Thanks to the large interior spaces, Villa Erba is available for use almost all year round. For a wedding with a ceremony and aperitif on the lake, I recommend the months from May to October.

Spring – flowering park and clear light

In May, the park is in full bloom; the light is clear and fresh. However, the weather is more changeable than many people think. Here, Villa Erba shows its strength: even when it rains, the evening indoors never gets any less pleasant, but only different.

Summer – long evenings and peak season

From June to August, long, warm evenings and sunsets after 9 p.m. bring sunshine. June is the favorite month for many couples. In July and August, the lake is crowded and sweltering—providing shade, water, and a ceremony only late in the afternoon.

September and October – warm light and tranquility by the lake

September is my personal favorite: the light is getting warmer and deeper, the tourists are fewer, the lake is quieter. In October, the days become shorter and cooler – for that reason, the salons with candlelight make for a particularly festive atmosphere. Those who get married in October should consciously plan their evening indoors.

Planning your wedding at Villa Erba

Civil ceremony or humanist ceremony

Symbolic ceremonies take place at Villa Erba – that is, civil weddings. The municipality of Cernobbio is currently offering other venues for civil weddings, such as Villa Bernasconi. The simplest solution for couples from Germany: They get married civilly at home beforehand and have a free ceremony at Villa Erba, just as you would like. You can read about how civil weddings work in Italy in my guide to Getting married in Italy.

Religious wedding in Cernobbio or Como

Those who wish to get married in church can have the ceremony held in a church in Cernobbio or Como, and then continue to the Villa. Expect additional processing time for the documents from both parishes – and the Villa’s closing time at 17:00.

Do you need a wedding planner?

Yes – absolutely for this scale. Established partners of the Villa, Pavillon, boat transfers, shuttles, several salons and often over 100 guests: This is a project that you can hardly coordinate alone from Germany. An experienced planner from the Lake Como knows the operations of the Villa and saves you a lot of time. You can find a selection in my post about The best wedding planners in Italy.

Tips for international guests

  • Recommends Malpensa as the airport and organizes transfers at fixed times
  • Book room quotas in two to three hotels instead of many individual accommodations
  • After the party, they plan to take regular shuttles back – taxis are scarce at night

Villa Erba is the right choice if you want to celebrate with many guests, needs a real plan for bad weather, and is looking for a location that is easily accessible on the southern lake. However, for a small wedding with 30 or 40 guests, it is hardly advisable because of the minimum catering requirement.

Those who want to celebrate more privately and perhaps even spend the night there will find it in the Villa Balbiano A wonderful alternative. Conclusion – for whom Villa Erba is the right choice

Lisa Clair, wedding photographer on Lake Como and founder of Love & Other Stories

My conclusion

A feast like in a Visconti film

Villa Erba is not the ideal location for a small, quiet wedding. It is made for couples who want to celebrate big, With many people who are important to them, in a place with history and a plan B that deserves this name.

What fascinates me about photography in this place is the change that takes place in just one evening: first the vast light on the water, then stucco, mirrors, and candlelight in the salons. A house where Luchino Visconti cut his films deserves images that look like cinema., And that is exactly why 35mm film and Super 8 are particularly suitable here.

To be honest, this villa needs budget, lead time, and good partners. Anyone who wants to celebrate with 30 or 40 guests is better off in a smaller place on Lake Como. However, anyone planning a large celebration on the water will find hardly a more beautiful setting here.
