The roots of Villa Balbiano date back to the 10th century – the name „Balbiano“ already appears in a document from the year 941. However, it only acquired its present form towards the end of the 16th century, when Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who was later appointed the first Duke of Alvito, acquired the estate and developed it into his main residence. From Milan, the villa can be reached by car in about an hour and 15 to 20 minutes (around 72 to 75 kilometres), making it easily accessible even for international guests arriving via Milan Malpensa Airport. Those who want to arrive in style can book a private boat from Como town or one of the surrounding jetties—an arrival moment that can be wonderfully staged and, for me as a wedding filmmaker and photographer, consistently provides one of the most beautiful shots of the entire day.
Architecture and interiors: frescoes, marble and Jacques Garcia
The façade of Villa Balbiano is deliberately understated: elegant, with grey stone ornamentation reflecting in the water of the lake – not a flashy, ostentatious building, but an architecture that derives its impact from proportion and clarity. Anyone who steps through the entrance hall, however, enters a completely different world.
Inside, guests can expect spectacular 17th-century frescoes painted by the Recchi brothers and Agostino Silva – two of the most important fresco artists of their time in northern Italy. The ceiling paintings, elaborate stucco work and historical collection items have been gathered over centuries; many of today's furnishings and art objects come from auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's. The six suites in the main building were individually designed by the renowned French interior designer Jacques Garcia, known among other things for his work at the Hôtel Costes in Paris. Marble floors, fine fabrics and antique pieces of furniture give each room an opulence that is rarely staged in such an understated way.

The gardens: award-winning and of incomparable expanse
Almost even more impressive than the building itself is the garden of Villa Balbiano – an expansive, meticulously maintained estate that has been recognised by the British Society of Garden Designers and earns the villa its reputation as one of the most beautiful wedding venues on Lake Como. Along a kilometre-long path of cypress trees and boxwood hedges, past a water lily pond surrounded by blue irises, one reaches a magnificent entrance avenue. Statues, fountains and centuries-old trees line the paths; the English lawn stretches right to the edge of the lake, where a private jetty and boat house are located.
Particularly noteworthy is the variety of different garden areas that can be used for a wedding:
- The main terrace overlooking the lake – ideal for outdoor dinners with up to 300 guests and one of the most spectacular sunsets Lake Como has to offer.

As a wedding venue on Lake Como, Villa Balbiano is designed for weddings of various sizes, making it attractive for both very intimate celebrations and lavish parties.
Overnight guests: The main building (Palazzo) provides space for up to 12 people in six opulent suites. Additional accommodation in the „Wing“ and the „Villino“ creates room for a further 8 to 18 guests. In total, up to 30 people can stay overnight directly on the estate – ideal for bridal couples who want to spend several days on-site with their closest family and bridal party.
Event guests: For the actual celebration, the villa offers significantly more capacity. Events with up to 550 guests can take place in the extensive gardens. For guest numbers of up to 200 people, the event fee is already included in the rental price structure; an additional fee applies for larger celebrations.

24 Stunden: ab ca. 50.000 €. Der Zugang beginnt am Hochzeitstag um 10 Uhr, eine Suite mit Seeblick steht für das Getting Ready bereit. Für kleinere Gesellschaften ist die Eventgebühr enthalten, für größere fällt ein Aufpreis an.
Zwei Tage mit einer Nacht: ab ca. 75.000 bis 100.000 €. Die sechs Suiten im Haupthaus bieten Platz für bis zu 12 Übernachtungsgäste, der Eventtag ist enthalten.
Drei Tage mit zwei Nächten: ab ca. 200.000 €. Das umfasst Anreisetag, Hochzeitstag mit Eventgebühr für bis zu 200 Gäste und Abreisetag. Die Übernachtung ist für bis zu 12 Gäste enthalten und lässt sich gegen Aufpreis auf rund 30 erweitern.
Mein Rat: Wenn euer Budget die Wahl lässt, nehmt mindestens zwei Tage. Ich habe die Villa Balbiano sowohl bei einer kleineren, sehr privaten Trauung als auch bei einer mehrtägigen Feier mit internationalen Gästen erlebt. Der Unterschied ist deutlich: Wenn Ankommen und Ausklingen dazugehören, schaut niemand auf die Uhr. Das spürt man am Tag selbst und später in der Reportage.
Nebenkosten, die oft übersehen werden
- Kaution: 35.000 €. Sie ist rückerstattbar, muss aber zum Zeitpunkt der Zahlung verfügbar sein. Plant sie in eure Liquidität ein, nicht nur ins Budget.
- Mehr als 200 Gäste: nur gegen Aufpreis möglich.
- Party-Verlängerung: Draußen endet die Musik um 21:30 Uhr, innen wird bis 1 Uhr gefeiert. Jede weitere Stunde kostet 3.000 €.
- Glashaus: Das Dinner in den Innenräumen ist auf etwa 55 Personen begrenzt. Wer mit mehr Gästen plant, sollte das Glashaus für unsicheres Wetter von Anfang an ins Budget nehmen. Bei 120 Gästen ist das kein Notfallplan, sondern Pflicht.
- Boote und Shuttles: Die meisten Gäste übernachten in der Tremezzina, etwa in Lenno, Tremezzo oder Cadenabbia, und müssen gebracht und abgeholt werden.
- Wedding Planner Rechnet mit etwa 8.000 bis 15.000 € oder 10 bis 20 % des Gesamtbudgets. Ohne Planner ist eine Hochzeit hier praktisch nicht umsetzbar, weil die Villa eine professionelle Produktion voraussetzt.
Das Glashaus: der größte versteckte Kostenpunkt
Ein Posten, den viele Paare bei der Villa Balbiano erst spät auf dem Schirm haben, ist das Glashaus im Garten, oft auch Conservatory oder Marquee genannt.
Der Hintergrund ist die 55-Gäste-Regel: In den historischen Innenräumen haben bei einem gesetzten Dinner maximal 55 Personen Platz. Sobald eure Hochzeitsgesellschaft größer ist, verlangt die Villa ein geschlossenes Glashaus im Garten, häufig vom Partner Privitera. Es erfüllt zwei Zwecke: Es dient als garantierte Alternative bei schlechtem Wetter and dämpft die Musik, sodass die Lärmschutzvorgaben vor Ort eingehalten werden.
For Miete und Aufbau des Glashauses solltet ihr mit 50.000 bis 60.000 € rechnen, je nach Ausführung und Planer auch mit 100.000 bis 130.000 €. Dieser Betrag kommt zusätzlich zur Location-Miete, die je nach Paket zwischen rund 50.000 € für einen Eventtag und rund 200.000 € für ein ganzes Wochenende liegt.
Mein Rat: Wenn ihr mit mehr als 55 Gästen plant, nehmt das Glashaus von Anfang an fest ins Budget. Es ist kein optionaler Notfallplan, sondern Teil der Grundkosten. Gerade bei Paaren, die sich in die Villa verlieben und erst danach rechnen, ist das der Punkt, an dem das Budget am häufigsten kippt.
Das Gesamtbudget realistisch einschätzen
Bei Anwesen dieser Klasse macht die Miete meist nur 10 bis 15 % des Gesamtbudgets aus. Für das Catering werden bei Hochzeiten in der Villa Balbiano häufig um die 500 € pro Person kalkuliert, bei 120 Gästen allein rund 60.000 €. As a photographer who works a lot with analogue film and Super 8 footage, I am always looking for places that inherently bring texture, light, and history—places where I don't have to stage much, but can just observe and capture. Villa Balbiano meets these criteria in an impressive way:
Light quality. The property's orientation towards the lake creates a soft, often golden late-afternoon light that blankets the facade and the terrace – the so-called „golden hour“ feels even more intense here due to the reflection in the water.
Contrasts and textures. Plan ahead. Due to limited availability and high demand – not least due to its prominence in „House of Gucci“ – preferred dates, particularly in the peak season from May to September, should be reserved as early as possible.
Choose the ceremony location consciously. Civil and symbolic ceremonies can be held both in the sheltered garden and on the main terrace. Anyone wishing for a Catholic or church wedding should enquire early on about the nearest churches in Ossuccio or Isola Comacina, as the villa itself does not have its own chapel in the classical sense.
