And there are places that only truly touch you when you step through the wrought-iron gate yourself, walk along the gravel path and suddenly find yourself standing in front of a honey-coloured façade reflected in the water of the lake. Villa Balbiano belongs to the second category. As a wedding photographer who has been working around Lake Como for years, I count it among the most impressive – and at the same time most underestimated – wedding venues in the entire region, and personally as my favourite Lake Como wedding venue of all. In this article, I will take you with me: through the history of the estate, through its rooms and gardens, through the practical questions surrounding capacity, costs and proceedings – and through my own photographic perspective on this very special place.

Villa Balbiano or Villa del Balbianello? An important clarification

The history of Villa Balbiano: Of cardinals and lavish parties
The roots of Villa Balbiano date back to the 10th century – the name „Balbiano“ already appears in a document from the year 941. However, it only acquired its present form towards the end of the 16th century, when Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who was later appointed the first Duke of Alvito, acquired the estate and developed it into his main residence. Gallio was one of the most influential figures of his time on Lake Como, and his desire for a prestigious seat still shapes the architecture of the villa to this day.
A century later, in 1787, the estate passed to Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini – a patron of the arts and collector whose circle of friends and guests belonged to Milan’s intellectual circles, including the poet Giuseppe Parini, one of the central figures of Italian neoclassicism. It was also Durini who significantly expanded and embellished the villa: he commissioned new frescoes, acquired surrounding land and transformed the residence into a place where – as historical sources state – „feasts, banquets and dances followed one another incessantly“. It is precisely this history of lavish parties and artistic patronage that one can still literally feel today when walking through the rooms.
Over the following centuries, the villa changed ownership several times, with each owner adding further splendour to the estate rather than diminishing it – a rarity for historic buildings of this scale. Today, spanning an area of over two hectares, Villa Balbiano is the largest private residence on Lake Como and is managed by the Heritage Collection, which has carefully restored it and made it accessible for exclusive stays and events.
Anyone who knows the villa from the cinema has probably seen it in House of Gucci: the estate served as the residence of Gucci patriarch Aldo Gucci and became known to an international audience through the film. For a short time afterwards, the villa could even be booked for a single night via Airbnb – a pop-cultural detail that clearly shows the symbolic value this place now holds.
Location: On the western shore of Lake Como, between water and mountains
Villa Balbiano is situated in Ossuccio, right on the western shore of Lake Como, in close proximity to Isola Comacina – the lake's only island. As a Lake Como wedding venue, it benefits greatly from this setting: the location is deliberately secluded, accessed via the ancient Roman road „Strada Regina“, which served as a trade route even in antiquity. From the road, one can scarcely guess the splendour that lies hidden behind the walls – an effect I love as a photographer, because the moment of „stepping inside“ becomes all the more overwhelming for couples and guests.
From Milan, the villa can be reached by car in about an hour and 15 to 20 minutes (around 72 to 75 kilometres), making it easily accessible even for international guests arriving via Milan Malpensa Airport. Those who want to arrive in style can book a private boat from Como town or one of the surrounding jetties—an arrival moment that can be wonderfully staged and, for me as a wedding filmmaker and photographer, consistently provides one of the most beautiful shots of the entire day.
Architecture and interiors: frescoes, marble and Jacques Garcia
The façade of Villa Balbiano is deliberately understated: elegant, with grey stone ornamentation reflecting in the water of the lake – not a flashy, ostentatious building, but an architecture that derives its impact from proportion and clarity. Anyone who steps through the entrance hall, however, enters a completely different world.
Inside, guests can expect spectacular 17th-century frescoes painted by the Recchi brothers and Agostino Silva – two of the most important fresco artists of their time in northern Italy. The ceiling paintings, elaborate stucco work and historical collection items have been gathered over centuries; many of today's furnishings and art objects come from auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's. The six suites in the main building were individually designed by the renowned French interior designer Jacques Garcia, known among other things for his work at the Hôtel Costes in Paris. Marble floors, fine fabrics and antique pieces of furniture give each room an opulence that is rarely staged in such an understated way.
For me as a photographer known for her documentary, understated style, that is precisely the appeal of this place: you don't have to stage anything here. The light falling diagonally through the high windows onto the frescoes, the shifting colours of the marble in the late afternoon, the texture of old silk wallpaper – all of this naturally provides image compositions that you can scarcely find anywhere else. Anyone familiar with my analogue approach using 35mm film knows how much such interiors flatter the grain and colour rendition of film.
The gardens: award-winning and of incomparable expanse
Almost even more impressive than the building itself is the garden of Villa Balbiano – an expansive, meticulously maintained estate that has been recognised by the British Society of Garden Designers and earns the villa its reputation as one of the most beautiful wedding venues on Lake Como. Along a kilometre-long path of cypress trees and boxwood hedges, past a water lily pond surrounded by blue irises, one reaches a magnificent entrance avenue. Statues, fountains and centuries-old trees line the paths; the English lawn stretches right to the edge of the lake, where a private jetty and boat house are located.
Particularly noteworthy is the variety of different garden areas that can be used for a wedding:
- The main terrace overlooking the lake – ideal for outdoor dinners with up to 300 guests and one of the most spectacular sunsets Lake Como has to offer.
- The secluded garden with centuries-old trees – a more intimate, shadier area that is ideal for the ceremony or drinks reception.
- The courtyard around the outdoor pool – large celebrations with up to 500 guests can be held here.

This variety of settings within a single estate is a huge advantage for me as a photographer: on a single wedding day, I can create completely different visual worlds – from intimate, shady-green portraits to golden evening light on the terrace, and wide establishing shots that show the entire backdrop and the lake in the background, all without having to change location.
Capacity and potential uses for weddings
As a wedding venue on Lake Como, Villa Balbiano is designed for weddings of various sizes, making it attractive for both very intimate celebrations and lavish parties.
Overnight guests: The main building (Palazzo) provides space for up to 12 people in six opulent suites. Additional accommodation in the „Wing“ and the „Villino“ creates room for a further 8 to 18 guests. In total, up to 30 people can stay overnight directly on the estate – ideal for bridal couples who want to spend several days on-site with their closest family and bridal party.
Event guests: For the actual celebration, the villa offers significantly more capacity. Events with up to 550 guests can take place in the extensive gardens. For guest numbers of up to 200 people, the event fee is already included in the rental price structure; an additional fee applies for larger celebrations.
Rental models: The villa can be hired exclusively for a single event day as well as for multiple days. According to currently available information, the minimum hire fee is around 21,000 euros per day, whilst a three-day exclusive use is estimated at around 58,000 euros. These figures can vary depending on the season, the number of guests and the additional services booked, which is why I recommend that every couple contact the Heritage Collection or the relevant booking team directly for a bespoke quote.

Why Villa Balbiano as a Lake Como wedding venue is ideal for documentary photography
As a photographer who works a lot with analogue film and Super 8 footage, I am always looking for places that inherently bring texture, light, and history—places where I don't have to stage much, but can just observe and capture. Villa Balbiano meets these criteria in an impressive way:
Light quality. The property's orientation towards the lake creates a soft, often golden late-afternoon light that blankets the facade and the terrace – the so-called „golden hour“ feels even more intense here due to the reflection in the water.
Contrasts and textures. The combination of rough stone, old marble, dense greenery and the mirror-smooth lake offers countless possibilities for compositions that appear particularly vibrant on 35mm film – especially the fine grain and warm colour rendering of analogue film complement the frescoes and patina surfaces of the villa wonderfully.
Narrative depth. A location with such a dense history – cardinals, art patrons, film sets – automatically provides a narrative layer that can be reflected in the visual language. Practical tips for couples choosing this Lake Como wedding venue
Plan ahead. Due to limited availability and high demand – not least due to its prominence in „House of Gucci“ – preferred dates, particularly in the peak season from May to September, should be reserved as early as possible.
Choose the ceremony location consciously. Civil and symbolic ceremonies can be held both in the sheltered garden and on the main terrace. Anyone wishing for a Catholic or church wedding should enquire early on about the nearest churches in Ossuccio or Isola Comacina, as the villa itself does not have its own chapel in the classical sense.
Schedule boat transfer. Although getting there by car via the Strada Regina is possible, organising a private boat transfer for the bride and groom and guests is well worth it – not only for logistical reasons, but because arriving across the water is a photographic and emotional highlight in itself.
Sort out permissions for drone footage. Special permits are required for aerial photography above the lake and the estate. I always clarify this with the venue in advance for my couples.

What role does the weather play, and is there a plan B? Lake Como is usually stable during the summer months, though occasional afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon in this region. The villa’s richly decorated interiors offer more than a worthy refuge for this—moving inside is by no means a photographic compromise here, but merely a change of backdrop from greenery and water to frescoes and marble.

Villa Balbiano achieves precisely this balancing act between centuries-old grandeur and tangible warmth, which makes it one of the most exciting addresses for me and my personal recommendation when it comes to the perfect Lake Como wedding venue.
