Villa Ormond: Who of one Wedding on the Côte d’Azur Dreaming of a wedding in a different place, they quickly end up in Nice, Cannes or Monaco, and the prices for locations are breathtaking for many couples. Yet, just about 45 kilometers east of Monaco, just behind the French border, there is a wedding location that hardly anyone knows: Villa Ormond. in Sanremo.

In July 2026 I photographed the wedding weekend of K & F there: three days, 135 guests, planned by Büsra von Kaipo Weddings. I have now been involved in over 100 weddings, at least 40 of them in Italy, and yet hardly any location has surprised me as much as this one. Since then, Villa Ormond has been the place I go to when I want to get away from it all. Secret wedding location tip in Italy It is ideal for anyone planning a wedding near the Côte d’Azur, but who does not want to pay the prices of the Côte d’Azur.
In this post, you will learn why Villa Ormond is the secret tip for your wedding near the Côte d’Azur, what the cost of a wedding at Villa Ormond is, how much space you have there, how to get there, when is the best time to travel, what a three-day wedding weekend in Sanremo can look like, what you should pay attention to when planning, and for whom this location isn’t really the right choice.

Villa Ormond Sanremo: A secret wedding location on the Italian Riviera
At a glance
Wedding at Villa Ormond: the most important facts
- Location: Sanremo on the Italian Riviera, about 15 km from the French border and 45 km from Monaco.
- Arrival: via Nice Côte d’Azur airport, from there about an hour to Sanremo.
- History: Belle Époque villa from 1889, designed by Emile Reverdin, owned by the city of Sanremo since 1930.
- Park: Palm trees, old trees and a Japanese garden, all on one property.
- Space: 135 guests had more than enough space outside and in the halls. The rain plan is in place.
- Privacy: Booked exclusively, the gate remains closed, and no one has any access from the outside.
My experience: Wedding weekend by K & F in July 2026, three days, 135 guests, planned by Kaipo Weddings.
Belle Époque with history: a villa that was created out of love
The history of Villa Ormond It fits wonderfully well with a wedding. The Swiss entrepreneur Michel Louis Ormond married the French poet Marie Marguerite Renet in Paris in 1866. Because his wife was ill, he sought the mild climate of the Riviera for her and bought a large estate in the east of Sanremo in 1875. When a severe earthquake damaged the old house in 1887, the family had a new one built: the present Villa Ormond was completed in 1889.
It was designed by the Geneva architect Emile Reverdin, who also built the opera house in Geneva. Among the guests of the family were, among others, the princes of Prussia, the Duke of Aosta and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Since 1930, the villa has belonged to the city of Sanremo, and that is one of the reasons why it has remained a secret to this day: there is no venue operator who would like to open it to the public. Villa Ormond marketed internationally, no presence at wedding fairs and hardly any reports in German.
Anyone wishing to get married on the Italian Riviera will still find everything they need in this location: a representative building with high halls, several floors, wide staircases and a view that shows the Riviera dei Fiori at its most beautiful.

The park: Palms, a Japanese garden and lots of greenery
A ring around Villa Ormond extends extensive park with palm trees, The old trees and paths that wind through the grounds are a special feature. A special feature is the Japanese garden, which was created in 2011 as a sign of the partnership between Sanremo and the Japanese city of Atami. For your wedding, this means: you have Mediterranean palm trees, quiet green corners, and a very special, almost meditative atmosphere on a single plot of land, without having to leave the grounds for photos or an aperitif.
Public parking, exclusive rental
In everyday life, the park of Villa Ormond is a public park where locals and visitors walk around. However, for your wedding in Sanremo, you book Villa Ormond exclusively. During the event, the gate remains closed and opens only after consultation with the villa, for example for service providers or your shuttle buses. There are no other visitors on the premises then, just you and your guests.
It’s this combination that makes Villa Ormond so special: A place that normally belongs to everyone belongs to only you on your wedding day. Since the villa is also not directly located on the street, no one from the outside has a view of your celebration. For a wedding on the Italian Riviera, where many locations are located right in the town center or directly on the promenade, this privacy is a real luxury.

Sanremo as a wedding destination: The city of flowers on the Italian Riviera
City of flowers and festivals
Sanremo is the center of the Riviera dei Fiori, the Flower Riviera. Flowers have been grown here for generations, and this is reflected in the city: gardens, palm trees, and flowers characterize the landscape almost all year round. Sanremo is also known for the Festival della Canzone Italiana, Italy’s most famous music festival, which has been held every year in February since 1951.
My advice: If you want to get married in the winter, avoid the festival week in February. Then the city is crowded, hotels are expensive and booked long in advance, and finding rooms for your guests will already be a challenge.
Old Town La Pigna, Russian Church and Port
If you are looking for additional locations for photos or a second-day shoot in addition to Villa Ormond, you will find them quickly in Sanremo. The old town of La Pigna with its steep, winding streets is the opposite of the spacious Belle Époque of Villa Ormond: narrow, weathered, full of stairs and passages. The Russian Orthodox Church with its onion-domed towers reminds you of the time when Sanremo was a winter retreat for European nobility. And at the harbor you get the maritime image that you would expect from a wedding on the Italian Riviera.
My tip: Take photos of these public places early in the morning. In summer, La Pigna and the harbor are lively during the day, whereas in the morning they are almost empty, and the light is then soft and clear.

Wedding near the Côte d’Azur: Location, arrival and shuttle
Between the Côte d’Azur and the Italian Riviera
Sanremo is located in Liguria, about 15 kilometers from the French border, about 45 kilometers from Monaco and about 60 kilometers from the Nice airport. Geographically, Sanremo does not belong to the Côte d’Azur, but to the Riviera dei Fiori, the westernmost section of the Italian Riviera. However, the coastline does not break at the border: behind Menton, the Côte d’Azur seamlessly continues into the Italian Riviera, with the same light, the same sea, the same palm trees and mountains that reach out to the water. If you are looking for a wedding on the Côte d’Azur, Sanremo offers exactly this atmosphere, only on the Italian side of the border.
Arriving for the wedding via Nice Côte d’Azur Airport
For many couples, the situation is ideal: Your guests fly to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, which is very well connected internationally, and are approximately one hour away from your wedding in Sanremo. Those who prefer to travel by train can also get to Sanremo from Nice via Ventimiglia. So you combine the easy travel arrangements of a wedding on the Côte d’Azur with Italian hospitality and Italian prices.
My advice: Organise a shared transfer from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport on the day of arrival, or at least send your guests a clear itinerary. Guests who are traveling to the Riviera for the first time often underestimate the fact that they will cross a national border and that rental cars between France and Italy can cost additional fees.
Côte d’Azur and Italian Riviera in one weekend
That’s exactly what makes a wedding near the Côte d’Azur so appealing: Your guests can drive to Monaco, Menton or Nice on a free morning and then celebrate with you again on the Italian Riviera in the evening. Give guests who stay several days a few travel tips for the Côte d’Azur on your wedding website. This will turn your wedding into a little vacation for many, and the long journey is doubly worthwhile.
Why your guests should not drive themselves
My advice for arriving on the wedding day: Be sure to arrange for shuttle buses for your guests. The few parking spaces on the grounds of Villa Ormond are reserved for the service providers, and your guests cannot park directly at the villa. Although there are parking options near the harbor, only the small shuttle buses are allowed to drive through the gate to the villa. This means that your guests do not have to walk long distances in evening attire and heels, and no one has to drive themselves after the celebration.
The best time to travel for your wedding near the Côte d’Azur
The climate on the Italian Riviera is one of the mildest in Italy, and that is exactly why European nobility used to come here in winter. However, there are months in Sanremo that are better suited for a wedding than others.
May and June are ideal: it is warm but not oppressive, the gardens are in bloom, and the large influx of holidaymakers has not yet arrived. September and the beginning of October are also recommended. The sea is still warm, the light is golden, and the evenings are pleasant for an outdoor celebration.
July and August also work well; that’s what the wedding of K. & F. showed. However, you should adjust the schedule to the heat: hold ceremonies and couple photos later in the afternoon or early evening and plan for shade and water for your guests. Around Ferragosto, in mid-August, the entire Italian Riviera and the Côte d’Azur are at their peak, with crowded streets and high hotel prices.
In the winter, the Riviera is mild, but for an outdoor celebration it is usually too cold. Thanks to the large halls of Villa Ormond, a winter wedding is also possible; the celebration then takes place indoors.
How much does a wedding at Villa Ormond cost compared to the Côte d’Azur?
The rental price for Villa Ormond at the wedding of K. & F. was 3,000 euros. For this price you get a huge venue with its own gardens, large halls and views over Sanremo. Anyone who has already looked for wedding locations on the Côte d’Azur will appreciate this price. [Placeholder: Comparison, e.g. „Compared to Villas on Lake Como or on the Côte d’Azur, where I photographed, the rent alone often amounted to 20,000-80,000 euros.
No tent, no additional budget
To this is added a savings that many couples underestimate when planning their budget: they don’t need a tent at Villa Ormond. With 135 guests, a rental tent for rainy weather quickly eats up a significant portion of the budget, and that’s even though they might not actually have to spend any money on it in the end. The rain plan is already built in here.
What costs you should plan to add
Costs
How much does a wedding at Villa Ormond cost?
- Rent: 3,000 euros at K. & F., for a villa with a park, large halls and views over Sanremo.
- Total budget: around 300,000 euros for three days with 135 guests and a completely custom design.
- No tent needed: The halls are a fully functional rain plan. That saves a lot of budget for 135 guests.
- Empty handover: Catering, furniture, decoration, lighting and technology are included as separate items.
- Plan construction time: A setting of this size does not happen on a weekday morning. Book the villa accordingly for a longer period.
- Shuttle buses: Required because guests cannot park directly at the villa.
My advice: Intentionally incorporate the budget you save on rent into the design, lighting, and entertainment. That’s exactly what the Villa Ormond is made for.
The low rental price does not mean that a wedding at Villa Ormond is overall cheap. Because the venue is handed over empty, additional costs include catering, furniture, decoration, lighting and technology. Also, take into account the build-up days that you should book separately, as well as the shuttle buses for your guests. My advice: consciously plan the budget you save on rental costs into the design. That’s exactly what Villa Ormond is made for, and that’s what will make the difference in your photos later on.
Space for 135 guests: The rain plan is already in place
There were 135 guests at the wedding of K. & F. and they had more than enough space, both outside and in the halls. Had we had to move indoors due to rain, that would have been possible without any compromises. From my experience with over 100 weddings, including at least 40 in Italy, I know how rare this is: at many wedding venues in Italy, including on the Italian Riviera, the rain plan is a compromise that gets cramped and the atmosphere suffers. At Villa Ormond it is a fully-fledged second option.
For you as a couple, this means one thing above all else: peace and quiet in the weeks before the wedding. You don’t have to check the weather app every day or decide on a last-minute tent. No matter what the weather brings, your celebration has a venue that is just as beautiful as Plan A.
Three days of wedding in Sanremo: The weekend of K. & F.
Real Wedding
The wedding weekend of K. & F. in numbers
- Friday: church wedding in Sanremo and pizza party at the couple's villa.
- Saturday: free wedding in the garden of the couple's villa, dinner and party in Villa Ormond in the evening.
- Sunday: Pool party at the couple's villa for the finale.
- 135 guests from several countries and 54 service providers for three days.
- Approximately 800 meters of fabric in Drapes, from the wedding ceremony to the reception.
- Over 60 single lamps, made especially for this concept, with a curved table for all the guests.
Planning and Design: Kaipo Weddings. The figures come from the report by Kaipo Weddings about this wedding.
K. & F. celebrated for three days, and I accompanied them every day. Their weekend shows how the Villa Ormond can be integrated into a wedding in Sanremo without them having to do everything alone, and why a wedding weekend near the Côte d’Azur works so well.
Friday: Church wedding in Sanremo and Welcome Event
The church wedding in Sanremo kicked off on Friday. After that, the event continued with the Welcome Event, where guests from different countries could meet each other and get to know each other.

Saturday: free wedding ceremony and celebration at Villa Ormond
Saturday was the actual Wedding Day. The free wedding took place in the large garden of the villa where the couple lived. It was held by Andrijana from Lovestories as a freelance wedding coordinator, And that in a bilingual way, so that all the guests of the ceremony could follow along. Especially in the case of an international wedding party like this, a bilingual wedding is a great advantage, because no one just watches; everyone really participates.

After that, the wedding party moved to Villa Ormond, where the dinner and party took place.

Sunday: Pool party to conclude the event
On the third day, we went back to the couple's villa for the pool party. After two festive days, it was the perfect, relaxing ending, and for me as a Photographer the opportunity to experience your guests again in all their glory.

Why a wedding weekend is worth it
With a destination wedding, your guests travel a long way, often from several countries. One evening would be almost too short for that. If you split the highlights over three days, each day has its own character, and no one rushes from one program to the next. This also benefits your photos: On the first day, everyone is still a little excited, on the second day it’s more formal, and by the third day you know each other, laugh together, and forget the camera. It’s in these moments that the most honest photos of the entire weekend often emerge.
An empty canvas for your design
For me, Villa Ormond is completely blank, like a white wall. It is not filled with furniture or a fixed style; instead, it leaves you and your planner full creative freedom. If you want to create your own unique touch at a wedding near the Côte d’Azur, this is the place for you.
Draping and table setting right down to the floor
K. & F. and Büsra from Kaipo Weddings took full advantage of this leeway: a sophisticated table setting and draping, i.e., fabric strips that were pulled really high under the ceiling. The architecture of Villa Ormond simply allowed for this. The fabric strips flowed right under the ceiling without requiring any elaborate constructions.
Ideas for your own concept
Because Villa Ormond doesn’t impose a style, it fits with very different concepts: classic and elegant with long tables and candlelight, modern and minimalist, or opulent with lots of fabric and flowers. My advice: Take advantage of the surroundings. Sanremo is the city of flowers, and floristry from the region not only looks great on the Riviera dei Fiori, but also tells you where you got married. Also pay attention to the lighting in the evening. The high halls are much more atmospheric with warm, dimmed light and many candles than with uniform, bright lighting, and your photos will benefit from that as well.
One and a half days of setup: Book early and exclusively
This freedom does, however, require time: The setup of the decor took a whole day and a half. A setting of this size does not happen in twelve hours. The Villa Ormond was therefore booked exclusively well in advance and for an extended period of time, so that all the setup work could take place in peace and quiet. My advice: Don’t just book the wedding day itself, but plan the setup days from the very beginning, and book early, because these exact time windows are crucial when booking exclusively.
Planning: This is how you prepare your wedding in Sanremo
Planning
Good to know before your wedding in Sanremo
- Best time: May, June, September and early October. In July and August, wedding ceremonies and couple photos are taken in the late afternoon.
- Avoid: the festival week in February and the time around Ferragosto in mid-August.
- Hotels: secure early room quotas and focus the guests on a few houses, which makes the shuttles easier.
- Marriage: A civil wedding is possible. Whether it will be performed at the town hall locally is up to the city of Sanremo.
- Planner: The villa does not have its own event team. Access, gate, setup, and all service providers must be coordinated.
- Photo spots: Front entrance, terrace, halls and gardens. A couple shoot only takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Why a local planner is worth it
Villa Ormond is not a traditional wedding venue with its own event team; it belongs to the city of Sanremo. Arrangements regarding access, setup times, entrance fees, and shuttles are handled through the villa itself; in addition, caterers, florists, technology, and furniture must all be organized separately. For couples planning from abroad, this is hardly manageable on the side. At K.& F., the entire planning was handled by Büsra from Kaipo Weddings. My advice: Hire a planner or coordinator to assist you with your wedding at Villa Ormond; they know Italy and can handle the communication on site.
Documents for your wedding in Italy
If you want to get married in Italy, as a German citizen you will need, among other things, a certificate of legal capacity, which you will apply for at your local registry office in Germany. For a church wedding, arrangements with your home parish and the local church are necessary. A civil wedding is not legally binding; for this reason, you are completely free in terms of location and timing. Many couples therefore combine a civil wedding at home with a free wedding on the Italian Riviera. Clear the documents early, as notarizations and translations require time.
Accommodations for your guests
Sanremo has a wide selection of hotels, ranging from classic grand hotels from the Belle Époque to smaller houses near the beach. However, if you have 100 or more guests, you should still reserve room blocks early, especially in the summer and during the festival week in February. My tip: Focus your guests on a few hotels. This greatly simplifies shuttle planning, and your guests will already start chatting together over breakfast.
Marriage in Villa Ormond: What is possible
To my knowledge, a civil wedding is possible at Villa Ormond, and you can celebrate it directly there. To find out whether a civil wedding can also take place at the Villa, you should contact the city of Sanremo directly, as the Villa belongs to them.
K. & F. deliberately chose to have the wedding in a different location. The reason was quite practical: With the half-day build-up for the ceremony, a second, large ceremony setting right next door would have been impossible. My advice therefore: If you want to lavishly decorate the Villa Ormond, have the wedding and ceremony at two different locations. This will relieve your decoration team and give your day a nice change of scenery.
If you plan for a more modest setting, a free wedding ceremony in the park of Villa Ormond can be beautiful. Then you should discuss with your planner exactly how quickly the area can be transformed into an aperitivo and dinner area after the ceremony.
Couple photos in Villa Ormond: My shots as a wedding photographer
Stairs, floors and gardens
As a wedding photographer on the Côte d’Azur and the Italian Riviera, I pay attention to how many different photo situations the location offers, without having to travel far. Villa Ormond is one of the most versatile locations I know. You have the many steps of the villa, the upper floor, the rooms on the ground floor, and the gardens with their palm trees and the Japanese garden. There are plenty of spots for couple photos everywhere, and we can switch between completely different moods within just a few minutes: from the clear Belle Époque architecture to the green, quiet garden.
For you, that means: We don't waste time traveling to other locations. A couple's shoot in Villa Ormond doesn't take more than 20 to 30 minutes, and you'll be back with your guests in no time.

The right light on the Riviera
My tip: Schedule your couple photoshoot for the time before dinner, when the sun is lower in the sky. In summer, the light on the Italian Riviera, just like on the Côte d’Azur, is very harsh in the midday hours, but in the evening it is soft and warm, and that’s when the bright facades and gardens look their best. If your schedule allows it, after sunset it’s worth taking a short second moment outside, when the sky over Sanremo turns blue and the villa glows from the inside.
Photography and film: How I captured your wedding near the Côte d’Azur
I work in documentary and editorial work. It’s not about posed poses; it’s about real moments: the look on your parents’ faces during the wedding ceremony, the friends standing together on the stairs of Villa Ormond, the laughter on the third day at the pool. This is how a story is created during a wedding weekend lasting several days, going far beyond just a few beautiful portraits.
Anyone who wants it can get additional analog images on 35mm film and footage with a Super-8 camera from me. Especially in a Belle Époque villa like Villa Ormond, these timeless formats fit perfectly with the surroundings. In addition, I have a drone pilot's license and offer drone footage. Whether and where it is allowed to fly at Villa Ormond is determined in advance with the location, as the villa is located in the middle of Sanremo.
For whom the Villa Ormond is perfect
Villa Ormond is ideal for couples who plan a large wedding with approximately 100 to 160 guests or more, who want to create their own unique vision and are looking for a location that they can transform to suit their needs. It is suitable for couples who want a wedding close to the Côte d’Azur without having to pay the prices of the Côte d’Azur, and who value privacy. It is also suitable for anyone planning a wedding weekend where Villa Ormond is the highlight of the celebration.
For whom the Villa Ormond is not suitable
As much as I love this location: it’s not suitable for every wedding.
For small celebrations, for example with 25 guests, I would not recommend Villa Ormond. The rooms are large, and a small group quickly gets lost in them. For intimate weddings, there are more suitable places on the Italian Riviera and the Côte d’Azur.
If you want to have your wedding and celebration with elaborate decorations in the same place and on the same day, there will be limited space. As with K. & F., a large setup takes time to set up, and having two large setups running in parallel is hardly realistic.
Anyone who wants the guests to arrive by car themselves should also think again: Without a shuttle service, logistics here do not work well.
If you are looking for a hassle-free venue with in-house catering, decoration, and an event team, the Villa Ormond is also not the right place for you. Here, you or your planner will organize everything yourself.
And if a civil wedding ceremony held directly at the venue is important to you, you should discuss this with the city of Sanremo before booking.

No, Sanremo is located on the Italian Riviera in Liguria. The Côte d’Azur ends at the border near Menton, only about 15 kilometers away. For your guests, a wedding in Sanremo nevertheless feels like a wedding on the Côte d’Azur: same coast, same light, same journey via Nice.
