Villa Erba on Lake Como \u2013 A history of a family villa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From the monastery to the summer residence of the Erba family<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Where today the Villa Erba<\/a> There once stood a monastery. In the early 19th century, the property was converted and was at one time part of the estate of the neighboring villa, today\u2019s Villa d\u2019Este. In 1882, Luigi Erba and his wife Anna Brivio purchased the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luigi Erba was the brother and heir of Carlo Erba, the founder of the eponymous pharmaceutical company in Milan. Between 1898 and 1901, the couple built a new villa directly on the lake \u2013 more representative and with a clear view of the water. The plans were drawn up by the architects Angelo Savoldi and Giovan Battista Borsani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architecture between Neo-Renaissance and Mannerism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The villa has an almost square layout,<\/strong> Arches on the facades, a tower and a wide staircase leading down to the lake. Inside, you\u2019ll find stucco, ceiling paintings, marble floors and chandeliers. The property also includes a greenhouse, stables and its own boat dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the parents\u201e death, daughter Carla Erba inherited the villa. She married the duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone \u2013 one of their seven children was Luchino Visconti, the later director of \u201cThe Leopard\u201e and \u201cDeath in Venice\u201d. Luchino spent many summers of his childhood here, and even longer after the parents\u2019 separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even as an adult director, he returned. At Villa Erba, he worked on the editing of his film \u201eLudwig\u201c. Visconti himself described the villa as a real Lombardian villa that his family loved very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a private country estate to a wedding location<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the Second World War, the villa was seized by the German army. In 1986, the heirs of the Visconti family sold the property to a public consortium. A modern exhibition and congress center was built in the park according to plans by architect Mario Bellini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
