And there are places that really touch you only when you yourself walk through the wrought-iron gate, along the gravel path, and suddenly find yourself in front of a honey-colored facade that is reflected in the water of the lake. Villa Balbiano belongs to the second category. As <a href=\"https:\/\/loveandotherstories.de\/en\/\">Wedding photographer<\/a>, The one that has been cruising the Lake Como for years counts them among the most impressive \u2013 and at the same time most underestimated \u2013 wedding locations in the entire region, and personally, it is one of my favorites. <a href=\"https:\/\/loveandotherstories.de\/en\/marrying-at-lake-como\/\">Wedding location on Lake Como <\/a>At all. <strong>In this article I take you along: through the history of the property, through its rooms and gardens, through the practical questions surrounding capacity, Both are located on Lake Como, both are spectacular, both are used for weddings \u2013 but they are two separate properties with different histories, different locations and a completely different character. The <a href=\"https:\/\/loveandotherstories.de\/en\/villa-del-balbianello-wedding\/\">Villa del Balbianello<\/a> belongs today to the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI) and is a museum that can be exclusively hired only on certain occasions. Villa Balbiano, on the other hand, is a private residence managed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/theheritage-collection.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heritage Collection <\/a>is rented out as an exclusive event location and holiday home \u2013 and it is precisely as this special Lake Como wedding venue that this article is about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The history of Villa Balbiano: Of cardinals and lavish parties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roots of<a href=\"https:\/\/theheritage-collection.com\/villa-balbiano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Villa Balbiano<\/a> date back to the 10th century \u2013 the name \u201eBalbiano\u201c already appears in a document from the year 941. However, it only acquired its present form towards the end of the 16th century, when Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who was later appointed the first Duke of Alvito, acquired the estate and developed it into his main residence. Gallio was one of the most influential figures of his time on Lake Como, and his desire for a prestigious seat still shapes the architecture of the villa to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A century later, in 1787, the estate passed to Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini \u2013 a patron of the arts and collector whose circle of friends and guests belonged to Milan\u2019s intellectual circles, including the poet Giuseppe Parini, one of the central figures of Italian neoclassicism. It was also Durini who significantly expanded and embellished the villa: he commissioned new frescoes, acquired surrounding land and transformed the residence into a place where \u2013 as historical sources state \u2013 \u201efeasts, banquets and dances followed one another incessantly\u201c. It is precisely this history of lavish parties and artistic patronage that one can still literally feel today when walking through the rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the following centuries, the villa changed ownership several times, with each owner adding further splendour to the estate rather than diminishing it \u2013 a rarity for historic buildings of this scale. Today, spanning an area of over two hectares, Villa Balbiano is the largest private residence on Lake Como and is managed by the Heritage Collection, which has carefully restored it and made it accessible for exclusive stays and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who knows the villa from the cinema has probably seen it in House of Gucci: the estate served as the residence of Gucci patriarch Aldo Gucci and became known to an international audience through the film. As a wedding location on Lake Como, it benefits greatly from this location: The location is deliberately secluded: One reaches the property via the ancient Roman road \u201eStrada Regina\u201c, which already served as a trade route in antiquity. From the road, one can hardly imagine the splendor hidden behind the walls \u2013 an effect that I as a photographer love because the moment of \u201eentering\u201c for the bride and groom and guests thus appears even more overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Milan, the villa can be reached by car in about an hour and 15 to 20 minutes (around 72 to 75 kilometres), making it easily accessible even for international guests arriving via Milan Malpensa Airport. Anyone who steps through the entrance hall, however, enters a completely different world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, guests can expect spectacular 17th-century frescoes painted by the Recchi brothers and Agostino Silva \u2013 two of the most important fresco artists of their time in northern Italy. The ceiling paintings, elaborate stucco work and historical collection items have been gathered over centuries; many of today's furnishings and art objects come from auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's. The six suites in the main building were individually designed by the renowned French interior designer Jacques Garcia, known among other things for his work at the H\u00f4tel Costes in Paris. Marble floors, fine fabrics and antique pieces of furniture give each room an opulence that is rarely staged in such an understated way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For me as a photographer who is known for her documentary style and unpretentious approach, this is exactly the appeal of this place: <\/strong>There\u2019s no need to stage anything here. The light, which falls obliquely through the high windows onto the frescoes, the changing colors of the marble in the late afternoon, the texture of old silk tapestries\u2014all of this in itself provides compositional elements that are found nowhere else quite like this. Along a kilometre-long path of cypress trees and boxwood hedges, past a water lily pond surrounded by blue irises, one reaches a magnificent entrance avenue. Statues, fountains and centuries-old trees line the paths; the English lawn stretches right to the edge of the lake, where a private jetty and boat house are located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particularly noteworthy is the variety of different garden areas that can be used for a wedding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The main terrace overlooking the lake<\/strong> \u2013 ideal for outdoor dinners with up to 300 guests and one of the most spectacular sunsets Lake Como has to offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The secluded garden with centuries-old trees<\/strong> \u2013 a more intimate, shadier area that is ideal for the ceremony or drinks reception.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The courtyard around the outdoor pool<\/strong> \u2013 large celebrations with up to 500 guests can be held here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The \u201eSecret Garden\u201c<\/strong> \u2013 a smaller, hidden area, perfect for cocktail hour or for quiet portrait shots of the couple away from the celebrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This variety of settings within a single estate is a huge advantage for me as a photographer: on a single wedding day, I can create completely different visual worlds \u2013 from intimate, shady-green portraits to golden evening light on the terrace, and wide establishing shots space for up to 12 people in six opulent suites. Additional accommodation in the \u201eWing\u201c and the \u201eVillino\u201c creates room for a further 8 to 18 guests.
